Stories from M&S Sheet Music: Leeds' Piano Heritage

Sheet music and david (ID 13094)

The Project
Sheet music was a bestselling product at M&S during the 1910s, at a time when gathering round the piano was a popular form of entertainment for many people. The Archive now holds a significant collection of sheet music, from folk songs and Christmas carols to hymns and music for dancing.

Music can benefit older people and those with dementia by reducing anxiety, lifting mood and helping to maintain speech and language. In partnership with the Leeds International Piano Competition we worked with a group of people who attend Leeds Complex Needs Day Centres. The group listened to recordings of the sheet music and created artwork and written pieces inspired by the music.

The Resources
Use our free resource pack and recordings to help your group discover the collection of sheet music held at the M&S Company Archive. The pack is divided into six themes, each theme has activities, archive images to aid conversation and more information about the music.

We'd love to know if you've used these resources. Drop us a line with your feedback to, or Tweet us @MandSHeritage or @LeedsPiano

This project was generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund
