M&S Swimwear at Victoria Baths

Last week 2 members of our archive team travelled to Manchester to refresh our temporary
swimwear exhibition at Victoria Baths, an amazing Grade II
listed building that served as a public swimming baths from 1906-1993.
Now reopened as a heritage visitor attraction, Victoria Baths offers a great backdrop
for a range of tours, events and exhibitions and so we jumped at the chance to
display some of the highlights from our fantastic M&S swimwear collection at
the ‘Water Palace’.
From knitted woollen costumes in the 1930s to body-enhancing swimwear of the
1990s, Marks & Spencer has used the latest technological innovations and
designs to provide swimwear that is not only on-trend but practical too.
The exhibition will run throughout the Baths’ 2014 season, until 2 November,
and includes men’s and women’s swimwear, as well as some early advertising
showing how swimwear marketing has developed.
The display can be viewed whenever Victoria Baths is open for public events
- on the first Sunday of each month until November, 12-4pm and each Wednesday
afternoon when the baths open for guided tours.
