    Sandford Award Winners

We are delighted to announce that the M&S Company Archive has won the Sandford Award for Heritage Education 2014 for their education programme.

The following assessment was made by the judges:

The M&S Archive is a unique educational opportunity. Marks and Spencer is a major and historic high street trading company that has been part of people's lives since 1884. The archive is small but touches on important aspects of people's experience: shopping, food, clothing and much else. It has a lot to offer schools and others in areas such as art and design and business, as much as history. It has developed a varied, active and vibrant education and outreach service since 2011. Much has been achieved in a very short time. Its offer is exciting and well thought out. The coherence and nature of its collections give it a unique selling point, and the archive has been quick to work in partnership with others where it can truly add value to an all round educational experience. The achievement of a high standard in such a short time is the result both of close cooperation between the education and the archive staff, and having a dynamic and experienced education officer. M&S must be congratulated for providing a secure funding and administrative base for the archive.

The Sandford Award is an independently judged, quality assured assessment of education programmes at heritage sites, museums, archives and collections across the British Isles.
