In 1988 M&S announced the purchase of two US chains;
Brooks Brothers and Kings Super Markets. Brooks Brothers, an own-brand retailer
with a reputation for quality, value and service, was the company’s first major
purchase in the USA and gave M&S 50 prime retail outlets and 3 clothing
factories across America. The purchase of Kings Super Markets in the same year
afforded M&S 16 supermarkets.
The newly catalogued M&S USA collection contains internal and external communications, including staff newsletters and customer publications, information about Head Office and store operations in the two chains, and legal and financial documents relating to both acquisitions. M&S USA is the latest addition to our catalogued international collection and joins material relating to M&S France, M&S Canada and International Communications (M&S World magazines), allowing researchers to explore how M&S became a global brand.
