About the M&S Company Archive

At the time of Marks and Spencers' centenary in 1984, the company took the opportunity to look back with pride at its long history. As a result, the surviving historical material from all over the company was brought together, making the core of the Company Archive. Since then, Archive staff have been working to acquire, catalogue and make available for use, all kinds of records of the companies activities.

These include documents, reports, letters, speeches, printed material from annual reports to advertsing leaflets, photographs, audio-visual materials and merchandise dating back to the days fo the Penny Bazaars. Today the Archive contains more than 60,000 objects from the last 125 years.

Add to the collection

The Archive welcomes donations from members of the public. Many of the items featured on this website were donated to us by customers or former staff members, and we are always eager to expand our collection and find out more about our rich heritage.

If you have a query, comment, or would like to donate an item to the archive, we would love to hear from you. Whether it's a 1920s advertisement, 1960s mini dress or 1980s company report, it will all be greatly appreciated for years to come.

The Archive is based in London, and is not currently open for visitors.
